Arts science maker collaboration process in Leeds

Hi all, if anyone is interested in this next Wednesday afternoon in Leeds you’d be very welcome. “Maker” in this context can be anything from code to electronics.

More info about the process here:

And about Superposition below because it’s not explained in that post.

If you’d like more detail on anything or have questions please do ask via this forum, I’m the organiser of this activity for Superposition, so should, in theory, be able to answer!

Many thanks and apologies for short notice.
Andy

WHAT ARE ASMBLY AND SUPERPOSITION?
Active since spring 2013 Superposition is a self-organising network and space for artists, makers and scientists to collaborate in Leeds and West Yorkshire.

Superposition has curated 10 public talks events in which an artist, a scientist and a maker present their work. The events have included visual artists, musicians, creative technologists, scientists from physics, biology, maths, computer science and chemistry, and makers ranging from the digital - both software development and hardware hacking - to textile design and crafting.

2016 is the fourth annual edition of ASMbly, Superposition’s pop-up lab and festival.

The lab part of ASMbly is the takeover of a city-centre space in Leeds by a group of artists, scientists and makers. It is open to anyone with an interest in working collaboratively, and we host the ideas generation process in the run up.

From previous experience we know that the lab will facilitate collaborations and seed new work for the following year.

For the final three days of ASMbly, the space becomes a public exhibition of prototypes and work in progress from the lab. The second Saturday is the festival day, with a public programme of workshops, talks and performances.

I don’t want to sound awkward but I don’t have a facebook account but would like to read that page. Could you post the gist of it here?

Happy to, I almost apologised for posting a Facebook link.

Would you like to take part in a collaboration process between artists, makers and scientists?

The photo is from the 2015 process - Lorna is a physicist, Rhiannon is a textile designer.

Superposition (more about us below) are going to try and host another ideas generation process in the run-up to this year’s ASMbly (2016 will be the fourth edition of ASMbly).

The process is open to anyone who is interested in taking part in collaborations between artists, scientists and makers, but no more than 15 people can be involved (the first session is too big with any more people).

If you already know about ASMbly, Superposition and roughly what the ideas generation process is and would like to be involved just follow the link so we can collect your details.

There has to be an equal balance of artists, scientists, and makers, and the process will only run once in the next twelve months. If you’d like to be involved it’s first come first served (while preserving the balance of artists, scientists, and makers).

You are very welcome to share the link with anyone you think would like to be involved.

There is more information below if this is new to you, and please do drop us a line (through this page is fine) if more detail about anything would be useful.

WHAT IS THE IDEAS GENERATION PROCESS AND WHAT IS INVOLVED?

It is a structure for generating ideas and facilitating a process of collaborations between artists, scientists and makers.

The 2015 process led to at least three ongoing collaborations between scientists from biology, physics and chemistry, a textile designer, an architect, a computer scientist, a hardware hacker, and people with several different approaches to being artists.

It starts with one very intense afternoon session, but after that any groups that form choose their own activity however they think best.

We time the process to lead into ASMbly, so there is a useful first deadline to act as a focus, and groups will be able to present research documentation or work in progress at ASMbly. There will be a check-in session in August to see where people are up to.

The only commitment you make is to come to the first session, after that everything is for people to manage themselves and everything is optional.

Superposition put a lot of emphasis on collaboration between groups of artists, scientists and makers, and the process can only go ahead if we have equal numbers of each.
